Who is AIA Insurance?

AIA is part of AIA Group (no surprises there), which is the largest life insurance company in the world based on market capitalisation. This in no way means they are the best life insurance company, just that they are the largest based on the value of the company.
….which is something AIA talk about in large text on their About page, but also something consumers probably don’t care about. There investors will though.
New Zealanders care about cover, price, service, and the claims experience. For this reasons we have tried to focus our AIA review on these key points.

What do we love (and not love) about AIA ?
- AIA offers AIA Vitality, which provides the tools and support needed to improve your health and wellbeing. AIA takes the approach that if they work closer with their customers and provide information on health topics, and encouragement to live a healthy life, they will have to pay less in claims. It's a win-win for both the insurer and the customer. To join AIA Vitality you simply need an eligible AIA insurance policy and pay a monthly membership fee of $11.50
- AIA are Rainbow Tick certified
- They are a GIANT global brand. So if you want to support a New Zealand health insurance company, look elsewhere.

AIA Reviews on Google
AIA NZ has a good number of reviews on Google, and the average rating is 3.6 stars out of 5 at the time of writing. For an insurance company, this isn't too bad. One recent review left by Urmila was "Don't have to wait for your claim very long. Claims are done within 24 hours. Very nice and friendly staffs who know their work well". One of the more negative reviews was lift by Michael which stated "Terrible customer service I have been having issues with a health claim I submitted. They twist the wording of the policy against you, will be making an official complaint and will also be raising a complaint with the insurance ombudsman. Asked for a copy of my health insurance policy and waiting to hear back apparently the request has to go to the "policies department" don't know how hard it is to receive my policy when I request it".
While looking for AIA reviews we also came accross a good comment in the personalfinanceNZ subreddit, which we have shared below. This user was asked “what’s the advantage to buying insurance online, versus seeking advis through a broker”. The response was the following five bullet points:
- A good broker will ask the right questions to ensure you know what you want covered and that you get the right products. Do know the difference between Trauma cover and Health Insurance?
- They should be able to access all Life insurers and compare pros and cons of different insurers (there is a big difference between insurers and you definitely get what you pay for).
- Discounts; buying online you’ll pay 100%. Through a broker you might get a 10-20% discount.
- Batting for your team; if you submit a claim and it gets declined, a good broker will bat for your team and make sure your insurer fulfills it’s obligations.
- Help you through the application; ensure you disclose the right things to minimize chance of non-disclosure issues. Also help you through claims (paperwork etc.).
