Important note about this State Insurance Review
We’ve done our best to ensure this review accurately represents the products this brand offers, however we can’t guarantee the content is fully up to date and 100% accurate. The only place you will find that is on the brands official website and within their policy documents. Treat this guide as a starting point, and if you need clarification, certainty, or more information, you need to contact the insurance brand directly.
There is a lot to read on this page, so we’ve condensed the main points of our State Insurance review down into a few bullet points.
- They claim to insure over 400,000 New Zealanders
- State is the only general insurance company to offer Flybuys, so if you register your Flybuys card with them they'll reward you with one Flybuys point for every $25 of premium you pay. On their website they following this claim with an asterisk, so it's safe to say their are a few terms and conditions that apply - so be sure to head to their website and read these if Flybuys is a big deal for you when choosing which insurance company to switch too.
- The brand is well-established, and has been serving Kiwis for over 100 years
- State has been 'Highly Commended" in the Reader's Digest awards, in the general insurance category. Yes, Reader's Digest still exists, and are apparently giving out awards.
- State offers a range of business insurance policies. These include business vehicles, liability insurance, machinery breakdown insurance, transit insurance, farm insurance, contract works insurance, business interuption insurance, and business assets insurance.

Who is State Insurance?

State Insurance is the sister brand to AMI, one of the many brands under the IAG umbrella. State is one of the most well-known insurance brands, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are the best. I’ve had insurance policies with AA Insurance, Initio, Cove, Southern Cross, but never State Insurance. To right this review I’ve relied on scouring the internet for a few days and reading hundreds of State reviews others have left online, and talking with friends and family who are customers.
Read our State Insurance review below to get a better idea of what we think about the brand, their products, and their pricing.
While reading this review please keep in mind that this isn’t personalized financial advice, nor is it written specifically for you and your personal circumstances. Be sure to do your own research before committing to any policy.
Super Quick State Insurance Review

State is one of the more well known brands in New Zealand when it comes to the insurance industry. If you haven’t heard of them you’ve probably been living in a cave. As with most insurance companies in NZ, State has some skeletons in their closet, and a quick glance over the past 5 years news headlines will reveal these.
However, they are also a trusted brand and thousands of customers have had a great experience with them. As part of writing this State Insurance review we’ve scoured the internet and noted down a few things to love about State, and a few things we don’t love so much. Check these out below…
What do we love (and not love) about State?
- State is a well-known brand, and more than likely here for the long-haul
- Their website is nice and easy to navigate and has plenty of information.
- You can get a quote and buy online, without too much stress
- The support the Rainbow Tick community
- It's another Aussie brand, and part of the gigantic IAG group
- You'll see a few bad-news stories if you dig deep enough
- I once accidently purchased a policy from State. I was getting a quote online, and went to the payment page and selected direct debit. I assumed their would be a "Confirm Purchase" button or something, but I closed the browser as the price wasn't right. I got my policy documents in my inbox a few minutes later and went from calm to sweaty in about 30 seconds. Luckily their 0800 number answered quickly and cancelled the policy for me. Perhaps it was my fault for not reading correctly, but I've never accidentally purchased something online before, especially not insurance! It left a slightly sour taste in my mouth and reminded me of all the antics Youi Insurance got up to when they operated in New Zealand (Fact: All of Youi's customers were purchased by Tower and transferred to them in 2020).

They amount of money I have paid them over the years has not been worth the stress they put me through.". I've gone with Cove for the last year."

Sure can. In fact, we recommend getting a State quote online. It’s the fastest way to figure out how much it would cost to insure through State.
I always prefer getting a quote from State online. Their website is pretty slick, and there are plenty of people moaning about how slow their call centre is to pick up the phone if you check out some feedback on their Facebook page. You can get a State Insurance quote online for most of their products. For car, home, and contents it is super easy. For more complex products, like some forms of business insurance, you’ll have to pick up the phone.
What Products does State Offer?
State has been around for a long time, and over this time they’ve been able to release a full suite of insurance products. This means you’ll find car, contents, house, landlord, motorbike, caravan, trailer, boat, travel, and contract works insurance all listed on their website.

Car Insurance
Like most car insurance companies in NZ, State offers comprehensive car insurance, third party, and third party fire and theft. State offers “online discounts” of between $10 and $50 when you buy online from their website. State also offers Business Vehicle Insurance, which is worth checking out if you use your vehicle for any sort of commercial purposes. State is also the only general insurance company in NZ that offers Flybuys on car insurance.

Home Insurance
State offers two different home insurance policies: home comprehensive, and home essentials. Home Comprehensive provides the greater level of cover, and covers your home up to the amount you choose to insure it for. Home Essentials is the cheaper form of home insurance and covers you for just the essentials, as the name suggests. With Home Essentials from State, you’ll be covered up to present value or the amount you insured your home for (whichever is less), if your home is covered by certain events.
