Introduction to Contents Insurance in NZ

Compare contents insurance regulalry to ensure you are getting the best deal. Once a year should be enough, but if you have a few minutes get a contents insurance quote online whenever you buy or sell any reasonable sized assets like a bike, ring, cellphone or TV.

Getting a contents insurance quote is actually one of the simplest insurance quotes to get – much easier than house insurance or car insurance.

We compare a wide range of products and brands across the insurance industry.

But while the range of insurance products compared is always growing, Compare.org.nz doesn’t compare all products and brands in the market. Visit Google to find a more complete range of products or brands that may be more suitable for you.

Our team endeavors to ensure that the information on this site is accurate but you should confirm any information with the product or service provider and read the information they provide on their own websites, as this will be more accurate and regarded as the ‘source of truth’. If you are unsure you should get independent advice before you apply for any product or service.

Contents Insurance Brands to Compare

Getting a contents insurance quote isn’t tough, and it doesn’t take long. The best way to compare contents insurance is to visit any of the insurance brands below and spend a few minutes finding out how much contents insurance will cost you on a monthly or annual basis.

You’ll need to know roughly the value of your contents, but all these brands make it pretty simply to get an estimate as they have a contents insurance calculator built into their quote process, or have one available on their website.

As always, don’t just compare contents insurance based on price. Take into account the level of cover each brand provides, and choose the product that you feel gives you best overall value.

How to Compare Contents Insurance

If you’ve read our guides on how to compare car insurance or house insurance, you’ll see that we are big on not comparing just by price (also known as the insurance premium).

You need to take into account the level of cover provided, price, and the quality of the brand you are buying from.

Here are a few things you should ask yourself when you compare contents insurance in NZ.

Answer

How Much Contents Insurance do I Need?

When you purchase contents insurance you’re going to be asked the value of the contents you want to protect.

When I first tried to compare contents insurance I went around all the insurance brand websites and said I had $20,000 worth of contents. It was only when I called AA Insurance to purchase the policy the man on the phone said “Only $20,000?! I’m sure you have more than that” – and he was right.

You need to count every little piece of contents in your house. Don’t just count your valuable assets like your laptop, phone, bike, and furniture. You’ll also want to add in your bedding, clothing, microwave, rugs, art, utensils, cushions, cutlery, camera, printer, chairs, etc

…and once you start adding all that up, the amount of cover you need to buy begins to grow quiet rapidly!

What Does Contents Insurance Cover?

Contents insurance, in general, covers damage or loss to the unfixed items within your home. This means the things you own which can be picked up and moved about. As with all information on this page, this is a general guide to help you compare contents insurance in New Zealand. If you want an actual contents insurance quote that you can buy online, then head to any of the insurance brands listed above.

Below is a good list to start with when thinking about what contents insurance covers. Every insurance policy is different, so it is important to keep in mind that some of these items may or may not be covered at different insurance brands, or they may be covered with special conditions.

That’s enough examples for now! But don’t forget your living areas, bathroom, laundry, and home office.

Something that is worth covering is the topic of contents insurance for renters. If you rent a home, you don’t need to worry about home insurance – that is the responsibility of the landlord. What you do need to worry about is contents insurance for all the stuff inside the house, just as a homeowner would. Some insurance companies in NZ even offer a specific renters insurance policy, so check out the brands above and see if any of them provide what you need as a renter, or head to Google to find a full list of brands that offer renters insurance.

What is Not Covered by Contents Insurance?

The easy answer is your car, home, pets, life, income, mortgage, health, and travel.

The more serious answer is hiding inside your policy document. This document is the single source of truth and will tell you what isn’t covered, under what circumstances and events.

Some general reasons things might not be covered under your contents insurance policy are:

  • You don’t secure your home properly
  • You fail to take reasonable care of your contents (yes, “reasonable care” is up for debate a little)
  • You leave your home unoccupied for a long period of time, such as all residents going overseas for a couple of months
  • The damage is gradual, such as that caused by mould, rot, corrosion, wear and tear etc
  • The loss is due to hacking or a virus
  • The claim is a result of a law being broken
  • The loss occurred while renovations were taking place at your home

As mentioned, this isn’t a complete list. You’ll need to investigate each insurance brand individually to see what sort of claims they will decline when it comes to contents insurance. A good general rule of thumb is to be honest and upfront at all times, or it could come back to bite you!

When Should I Buy Contents Insurance?

There are two times you should actively compare contents insurance quotes.

Firstly, after ever new big purchase.

Once you make a significant purchase, it’s a good idea to ensure it is covered by your contents insurance policy. Big purchases might include such things as engagement rings, valuable sports equipment, or new pieces of furniture.

Some contents insurance policies will require you to individually specify high value items. This means you need to give your insurance company a call, and let them know about the new purchase, or it might not be covered.

Secondly, compare contents insurance at least once a year.

Insurance companies in NZ are often updating their pricing and policies, so it pays to do an annual check of all the insurance products you hold. You might be able to fin a cheaper deal, or a better value deal, just by checking some of the insurance brands listed above.

Who Has the Cheapest Contents Insurance?

The best way to get cheaper contents insurance is by shopping around. The second best way is to increase your contents insurance excess, and this will reduce your monthly or annual premiums. The third best way is to sell your assets so you have less unnecessary junk to insure!

But in all serious, compare contents insurance regularly to ensure you are getting the best deal. As I say, it’s not as hard as you might image, and you can get a contents insurance quote online in less than five minutes. It’s a no brainer!

How to Use a Contents Insurance Calculator

There are a few contents insurance calculators, but they are all pretty tedious. AA Insurance has one you can view on their website which takes you through each room in your home, and you add up the estimated cost of all your contents. As you can imagine, adding up the values of your fridge, freezer, jug, cutlery, linen, towels, shaver, chairs, lamps, clocks, curtains, mirrors, phones, suitcases, bags, pots, books, rugs, cushions, art, alcohol, and more….takes FOREVER.

I’m lazy, so I guesstimate in about 5 minutes using a Google Sheet or Excel spreadsheet, but this probably isn’t the best advice or suited to everyone. You can easily create your own contents insurance calculator in either of these tools by walking through your home and jotting in the value of everything you see and want covered under your contents insurance. Once this is done, get a contents insurance quote from any of the insurance companies in NZ listed above.

There is no combined house and contents insurance calculator on any insurance website in New Zealand that we are aware of.
