Introduction to PD Pet Insurance NZ
PD Pet Insurance launched in NZ in October 2020. They are a specialist insurer focused solely on pet insurance, and so far they seem to be doing a good job of it.
So who is PD Pet Insurance? Like most insurance companies in NZ, it’s a bit of a maze to find out who the ultimate owner is. In the case of PD, their underwriter is Pacific International Insurance, which is in turn owned by Badget International, which looks to be a giant South African brand operating in Australia and NZ.
That’s no surprise however, the insurance industry normally traces back to offshore mega-brands! Don’t forget AMI and State are owned by giant IAG, and AA Insurance is majority owned by Aussie giant Suncorp.
If you’re looking for a “NZ born and bred” pet insurance company to keep your dollars local you’ll have to pick Pet-n-Sur, Cove, or Tower.
PD Pet Insurance Review Summary
If you can’t be bothered reading our full PD Pet Insurance review, here’s a quick 3 minutes summary.
Reviews from social media tend to lean towards favourable, and there are a lot of comments about how quick they are to pay claims, and a fair few comments from people who have been disgruntled at Pet-n-Sur and switched happily to PD Pet Insurance.
It's actually how crazy fast they are! I've submitted maybe 5 claims within a few months (gotta thank my dog for that 🙄). Most were same day payment. Only one was a bit longer than usual but it was still quicker than Petnsur and Southern cross (I've been with both).

I'm with PD and had the same quick turn around. If you send vets notes and receipt they pay straight away. So eazy to submit on line.

PD Pet Insurance Plans
PD offers insurance for both cats and dogs, and has a choice of three different plans to choose from: Accident, Classic, and Delux.
Since you(hopefully) know the difference between a cat and a dog, let’s jump straight into looking at the differences between these three pet insurance plans, and which one could be most suitable for you.
Accident Plan
This is their cheapest pet insurance plan – as accident only plans always are. This plan will just cover accidents such as your dog playing on the road and getting hit by a ute, but it won’t cover illnesses such as your dog developing cancer.
Classic Plan
This is what you’d buy if you were looking for a pretty standard pet insurance policy. It covers both accidents and illness, and doesn’t have any extra “bells and whistles” that some other pet insurance plans might such as dental and day-to-day care.
Deluxe Plan
This is the Classic Plan, but with dental benefits added on.
As you’d expect, the prices of each of these policies vary. We looked at a Labrador Retriever and got quotes for all three plans. The Accident Plan cost $17.60 per month, the Classic Plan $57.92 per month, and the Deluxe Plan $75.92 per month.
Plan Comparison

Bonus PD Pet Insurance Reviews
We like to read as many reviews as we can when comparing pet insurance, and often this means scouring through the depths of the internet to find out what people have said about each brand, without looking at moderated reviews that each brand cherry-picks for their own website.
In the case of PD Pet Insurance, we could find a number of reviews on Google, Reddit, and Facebook.
PD Pet Insurance Reviews on Google
Most of the PD Pet Insurance reviews on Google are positive, and they have an average 4.4 star rating. There are a handful of negative reviews as most insurance brands have. One person states "If I could give 0 stars I would. Disappointed when interpretations at claim time were different from what I had been led to believe I was entitled to at sign up time!"
PD Pet Insurance Reviews on Discussions Forums
Pet insurance is often discussed on New Zealand subreddits, and PD Insurance is mentioned here and there with both positive and negative remarks. Take the screenshot below for instance; one Kiwi initially expresses praise for PD, then another Kiwi jumps in to say they are scammers. This is exactly the type of discussion which makes comparing pet insurance such a headache!
