Southern Cross is one of the largest healthcare organisations in NZ. They offer health insurance, travel insurance, and pet insurance.
Although they offer a range of products, this specific review is about Southern Cross Pet Insurance, not health or travel.
Southern Cross Pet Insurance Review Summary
Writing a review of Southern Cross Pet Insurance was always going to be a big task. They are one of New Zealand’s largest pet insurance companies and offer two types of products, for both cats and dogs.
Their two products are PetCare, and AcciPet.
Simply put, PetCare is a comprehensive plan which covers both accidental injury and illness. AcciPet simply covers accidental injury.
To put it a different way, you’ll be covered with their PetCare plan if your pet either gets hit by a car, or gets cancer. With the AcciPet plan, you’ll only be covered for the pet getting hit by the car, and not the cancer treatment.
As a grateful recipient of a gorgeous new puppy I feel I must warn you of a problem with pet insurance. We had a free six week insurance policy with Southern Cross as part of the purchase of our little boy. He developed a skin allergy and subsequent tests and vet bills created a claim of $260 approx. We have now learnt that they are saying that it is a pre existing condition therefore not covered.

My friend had a puppy stood on by a pony. $1800 it cost, and Southern Cross paid most of it. I think about $1500.

Love…
- Southern Cross is a large, stable, well-known company
- They offer two policy types to choose from
- Their pet insurance quotes are easy to get online
- Claims are easily lodged online
Don’t love…
- They aren't a pet-specific insurance company.
Southern Cross Pet Insurance Plans
There are two plans offered at Southern Cross Pet Insurance: PetCare, and AcciPet.
As the name suggests, AcciPet is an accident-only policy, much like that offered at PD Pet Insurance or Cove Pet Insurance. This policy only covers accidental injury, such as your cat running onto the road and getting hit by a car. It’ll cover up to $5,000 in total per year for these sudden unforeseen events.
PetCare is the pet insurance plan that provides the most cover. It covers both accidental injury, as the AcciPet plan does, and also illness such as cancer. This option is typically picked by people who want a larger range of events and conditions to be covered, but does cost a little extra each month. With Southern Crosses PetCare plan you can also choose to add on dental care, or day-to-day care. Both of these cost and extra $10 to $15 per month.

Southern Cross Pet Insurance Reviews on Discussions Forums
I guy by the name NazalWeazel had this to say about Southern Cross Pet Insurance: "I have three cats, all on Southern Cross. One of the cats developed renal issues ~4 years ago, and his ongoing treatment cost refunds from insurance more than pay for all three cats' premiums combined! And most importantly, he's able to continue a comfortable life. More than anything though, having a fully insured pet means there's never any question about taking them to the vet if something feels off. Scratch? Vomiting? Not eating? Straight to vet, no need to wait to see if it gets worse so you're not wasting your money."
