Introduction to Pet-n-Sur
Pet-n-Sur is one of the larger pet insurance companies in NZ, and I’ve been holding off on writing a review on them because it seems Kiwis are pretty divided. There are of course happy customers, but there are also many very vocal opponents – moreso than I’ve seen with any other pet insurance brand.
We’ll get onto the Pet-n-Sur reviews from past and present customers shortly, but let’s first take a closer look at who Pet-n-Sur actually are.
Pet-n-Sur are one of the few 100% New Zealand owned and operated pet insurance brands in NZ. They are owned by Beneficial Insurance which offers the likes of Mechanical Breakdown Insurance and Credit Contract Indemnity. Pet-n-Sur Review Summary
Every insurance company in NZ gets a bit of hate online. Afteral, they don’t approve every single claim, so it’s only fair that people with denied claims will give bad reviews and spread negative comments about the company.
But, in saying that, every time there is an online discussion about which pet insurance company is the best in NZ, there seems to be a lot of hate for Pet-n-Sur. Whether this is fair or not only those involved will know.
Pet-n-sur absolutely continue to harass you. I have had calls from them for 3 years despite continually asking to be taken off their data base. Also asked if "I don't care about my pets" once I cancelled the insurance.
I've found Southern Cross to be excellent, plus you can pay for add ons to put towards dental/prescription foods etc (which not every insurance company offers). Its more expensive but pretty comprehensive coverage options. Pet n Sur can be good too. I'd recommend staying away from PD Pet Insurance though. Certain breeds can be subject to exclusions, so have a chat to them about your individual pet. Southern Cross also offer a free 6 week policy for new puppies/kittens.

They are absolutely hated by many, and loved by others. Something worth noting is that Jamie who wrote the negative Google review updated it a while after posting it, and he said that although he can’t comment on the specifics of the Insurance Ombudsmans ruling, he can say that he highly recommends challenging the insurance brand should they deny your claim…. which sort of sounds like he got what he wanted in the end. 😉

Pet-n-Sur reviews on google average out at 3.9 stars as at the time of writing. This is over a total of 360 reviews. Jamie P writes "I would strongly advise against using this company. When it came to paying the full policy amount they rejected the claim. I engaged a lawyer but as they now refuse to communicate in good will we will have to go to the Insurance Ombudsman. Pet N Sur have a reputation for not paying out on policies (our dogs surgeon actually alerted this to us) and I wouldn't want this to happen to anyone else."

Timmy on Reddit states, "Both our dogs are fully insured with Pet N Sur. Had no complaints about the service. Like any insurance its an exchange of risk. You risk paying more in premiums than you claim, they risk the opposite", which we feel is a fair assessment of insurance in general.
